The Plastic Effect

Did you know that although Canadians make up less than 0.5 percent of the global population, we use 1.4 percent of all plastic produced?

Unfortunately, Canada is a disproportionately large contributor to the plastic problem our world is facing. Furthermore, only 9 percent of our plastic waste ends up actually recycled! Where does the rest of our plastic and recyclable waste go? Most of it ends up in landfills and oceans. Diving In: The Art of Cleaning Lakes and Oceans is collaborating with Divers for Cleaner Lakes and Oceans alongside 7 Arts Councils in British Columbia to counteract the amount of waste that ends up in our waters. We are hosting community shoreline and underwater cleanups around Howe Sound (Átl'ḵa7tsem) throughout 2021. Artists and school groups will then reimagine the trash that has been collected as beautiful works of art that will tour galleries in 2022.

This is the largest environmental art campaign in this region to date.

How you can get involved:

  • Attend our shoreline and underwater community cleanups throughout 2021

  • Follow us on social media to keep up to date with events and news: Instagram & Facebook

  • Donate to support the cause (all donations go directly to artists and providing supplies for cleanups)
